Use flash sparingly. In most outdoor situations aperature and shutter speed compensation should be used instead of flash to make use of available light. If your subject is covered by deep shadow, however, there may be no choice but to use a built-in or shoe-mounted flash. Modern TTL metering systems make correct exposure possible even with the less-than-ideal frontal flash.
